The 1980s ranch houses near downtown Chandler were built with generous back yards and a very small patio — a covered slab off the back door, wide enough for two chairs, poured when the rest of the yard was lawn nobody was going to sit on. Forty years later the lawn is on its way out and the slab is still the only place to put a table. That is the job here: taking a back yard that was designed around grass and giving it a surface that matches how the family actually uses it. We build patios and patio extensions, front walkways, side-yard paths, stepping stone runs, and the borders that hold rock and planting apart from the walking area. Layout comes first — where the shade is at five in the afternoon, where the gate is, how wide a path has to be for two people to pass — because a patio put in the wrong corner of the yard is a patio nobody sits on.
The old concrete on these downtown-area lots is where the caliche shows itself. A walk poured in 1984 on ground that was never properly prepared has usually lifted at one or two joints by now, and the tripping edge is the reason most people finally call. Grinding it flat buys a season. Taking that section out and rebuilding on a prepared base is the version that stops the problem, and we will tell you honestly which one the walk in front of your house is a candidate for.
