Driveways, slabs, walkways and decorative concrete, formed and finished — Chandler, Maricopa County.
Concrete in Chandler is poured over caliche, and caliche is the reason two slabs on the same street can behave completely differently. Under a thin layer of topsoil it sits hard as rock in places and turns to soft pocket in others, and a slab that bridges the two cracks along the line where they meet. So the work starts below the surface: the subgrade cut to a consistent depth, soft spots dug out and replaced with compacted material, forms set to the fall we want rather than to whatever the ground happens to do, and control joints cut where the slab is going to want to move anyway. We pour driveways and driveway approaches, back patios and slab extensions, walkways, equipment and shed pads, curbing, and decorative finishes — stamped, broom-finished or coloured — for people who do not want plain grey.
The other thing caliche does is hold water. It drains slowly, so a Chandler yard that already pushes monsoon runoff toward the house does not forgive a slab poured dead level against the foundation. We check where the yard drains before a single form goes in, and set the fall so the surface sheds away from the building rather than parking water at the base of the wall for two days after a storm.
Water, rock, grass and shade — the whole yard, by one crew.
