Apache Junction sits at the foot of the Superstition Mountains, on the Pinal County side of things, and the desert here does not stay outside the fence. Leave a lot alone for a season and native growth takes it back — volunteer mesquite and palo verde coming up through the gravel, tumbleweed stacked along the fence line, a monsoon's worth of weeds in ground that was clean in May. The parcels are bigger and rougher than what the inner Valley has, so the work is heavier with them: a clean up out here fills a trailer instead of a few bags, and a surface has to cover ground a city lot never had. The water is different too — wells and shared lines are common enough that a sprinkler job starts by finding out what is actually feeding the property before anyone puts a shovel in.

Out here the yard is mostly rock and what grows in it on purpose. That puts three things at the centre of the work: water that has to be sorted out before anything else is worth doing, growth that has to be cut back and hauled off before it takes the lot, and a surface — pavers, concrete, a patio, synthetic grass where somebody wants green — laid on prepped ground so it stays put on parcels that slope toward the foothills. Everything else is the desert doing what it does, handled on purpose instead of once a year in a panic.
The scale is what surprises people who move out from the inner Valley. A cleanup that would be a morning in Mesa is a loaded trailer here, a driveway is longer, a fence line is further from the house, and the wind comes off open desert with nothing to slow it down.
