Ground out toward the Superstition Foothills and Peralta Trails is rarely flat. The parcels run downhill away from the mountains, and that slope is doing something every time it rains whether anybody has thought about it or not. Building a patio here is as much an earthwork question as a surface question — cutting a level pad into ground that is not level, holding the high side with a low wall or a graded transition, and setting the fall on the finished surface so storm water crosses it and keeps going rather than collecting against the house. We build patios and patio extensions, walkways from the drive and the gate, side paths, stepping stone runs, and the borders that keep rock and planting out of the walking area.
Watch where the water already goes before deciding where the patio goes. On a sloped Apache Junction lot the monsoon has been carving the same path across the property for years, and it is usually visible in the gravel if you look for it after a storm. Building across that line without accounting for it means the new surface becomes the new channel. We walk the fall of the lot with you before anything gets marked out.
