Poda de palmas is the job Nefi names in his own words, and it runs alongside the rest of the tree work: shade trees thinned so wind moves through the canopy instead of pushing on it, citrus opened up instead of rounded off with a hedge trimmer, dead limbs taken out, and palms cleaned back to a proper cut at the trunk rather than sawn off wherever a ladder happened to reach. A palm left alone stacks up dead fronds, hanging date clusters and weight nobody sees from the ground. Everything that comes off goes on the trailer the same visit.
The big lots east of Country Club are where most of this work comes from. They still carry mature citrus and date palms that nobody has gone up in for years — trees planted when the lot was an acre of irrigated ground, now well past what anybody is trimming from a ladder in an afternoon.
