Mesa summers are long enough that a watered lawn spends half the year losing. That is the case for synthetic grass here, and it is the only kind of grass we install. Done properly it is not a rug thrown over dirt. The old surface comes out, the ground gets graded so water still has somewhere to go, a compacted aggregate base goes in, the turf gets laid with the blades all running the same direction, the seams get joined so they disappear, the perimeter gets nailed or anchored to an edge, and infill gets brushed in so the blades stand up instead of lying flat. What you get back is a yard that looks the same in July as it does in February, with no watering, no mowing and no bare patch where the dog turns around.

In full afternoon sun it gets warm, the same as pavers or concrete do. Shade over part of it and a rinse with the hose make a real difference, and it is worth deciding which part of the yard it goes in with that in mind.
