Artificial turf over a draining base — green all year, no watering — Gilbert, Maricopa County.
A Gilbert back yard is small and it gets used every day, and that is exactly the yard synthetic grass was made for. It is the only kind of grass we install. The old surface comes out, the ground gets graded so water still has a way to leave, a compacted aggregate base goes in, the turf is laid with the blades all running the same direction, the seams are joined so they disappear, the perimeter is anchored to an edge, and infill is brushed in so the blades stand up. The yard then looks the same in July as it does in February — no watering, no mowing, no worn track along the fence and no muddy corner by the gate.
The parts of a Gilbert back yard that fail are always the same parts: the dog track along the fence, the worn strip to the gate, and the corner in the block wall's shade that never gets enough sun. Those are the exact places turf earns its keep, because none of them were ever going to hold anything living.
Water, rock, grass and shade — the whole yard, by one crew.
