Driveways, slabs, walkways and decorative concrete, formed and finished — Gilbert, Maricopa County.
Concrete is the other half of the hardscape work — driveways, back yard slabs, walkways, pads for a shed or a spa, curbing, and decorative finishes when the point is for it to look like something rather than disappear. The sequence does not change: form it, get the sub-base right, set the joints where the slab is going to want to crack anyway, pour, screed, float, finish it the way it was agreed, and cut. In Gilbert the sub-base does most of the arguing, because a slab poured over fill that was never properly compacted will find its own cracks no matter how good the finish looked on the day.
What the builder left is the starting point for most Gilbert concrete work: a small slab at the back door, a two-car driveway, a front walk, and nothing else. Twenty years on, the job is usually extending one of those or replacing a panel of it — which means matching a height, a joint line and a finish that somebody else chose.
Water, rock, grass and shade — the whole yard, by one crew.
