Driveways, patios and walkways in paver stone, set on a compacted base — Tempe, Maricopa County.
On a Tempe lot the driveway is not a detail, it is a large share of everything the street can see. Around Maple-Ash and the older blocks the drives were poured narrow, for one car and a era when nobody parked two, and they are now half a century of cracks with a strip of dead ground down each side. Pavers are what fixes both at once: the surface, and the width. We lay paver driveways, widen existing ones, build the parking apron out to the fence line, and run paver walks and back patios to match. The stone is what you see. What decides how it wears is the base beneath it — excavated to depth, compacted in lifts, screeded flat, with edge restraint all the way around so the field cannot creep outward when a car turns on it.
The Tempe complication is usually the sidewalk. These older streets have a city walk running across the front of the drive, sometimes at an awkward height after decades of root lift, and the new surface has to meet it flush without a step. We set that transition first and work back toward the garage, because getting it right at the street is the part you cannot fudge later.
