Fix irrigation leaks, new lines for new projects — that is how Nefi describes this part of the work, and in Mesa it covers more ground than it sounds like. Much of the older grid was platted around flood irrigation, so a single yard here can be carrying three generations of watering at once: the original flood grading, a sprinkler system somebody added later, and a drip line run around the rock more recently than that. We find the leak, repair the line or the valve, and where the system was never right to begin with we run new line instead of patching the same spot a third time. New projects get their lines laid out first, before rock or sod goes over the top of them.
In the flood-irrigated parts of Mesa — Lehi, the older streets around Alta Mesa — the repair is often as much about tracing what is actually connected to what as it is about the fix. Caliche matters too: under most of these yards there is a thin layer of topsoil and then rock-hard ground, and that is what decides how deep a drip line can practically be buried without pretending otherwise.
