Take the lid off a valve box in Maple-Ash and you can usually read the history of the yard inside it — old pipe, newer pipe, and somebody's repair made with whatever happened to be on the truck that day. The older parts of Tempe still run the system the house was built with, and that system was designed to push water at a lawn, not to feed plants on a drip schedule. We chase down leaks and fix them: the wet patch in the gravel, the head that will not shut off, the line that has been soaking the base of a wall for weeks.
