Building on these lots starts with what is under the surface. Slope, rock, caliche and loose fill all move if pavers are set on them without a compacted base, and a patio that settles unevenly announces it in the joints inside a year. We build patios, walkways, seat walls, borders and paver work — excavated, based, compacted and set level, with the edges restrained so the field stays tight.
On a parcel this size the patio does not have to sit against the back door. It can go out where the mountain view is, and that changes the job — more base work, a walkway to it, and a look at how water crosses the ground between the two. We lay both out before anything is dug.
